Lake Views, Open Roads & A Slower Side of Vermont
The Champlain Islands feel like a different pace entirely—even within the Champlain Valley.
Connected by a series of bridges and causeways, this stretch of land out into Lake Champlain offers open views, quiet roads, and a sense that you’ve gone just far enough to leave everything else behind.
It’s not a place you rush through. It’s a place you move through slowly.

What Are the Champlain Islands?
The Champlain Islands sit in the northern part of Lake Champlain, connecting mainland Vermont to the Canadian border.
They include:
- South Hero
- Grand Isle
- North Hero
- Isle La Motte
Each one has its own character, but together they form a continuous experience of lake, land, and open space.
Driving the Islands
One of the best ways to experience the islands is simply to drive through them.
The route itself is part of the experience:
- long stretches with water on both sides
- quiet roads with minimal traffic
- frequent opportunities to stop and take in the view
The drive from Burlington through South Hero and into Grand Isle is especially memorable.

Local Tip
If you’re heading into the Champlain Islands, don’t treat it like a quick stop.
Give yourself time to move through it without a strict plan. The pace is different out here, and the experience tends to come from what you notice along the way—not just where you end up.
